Young Egyptian actress Ateen Amer
is filming the scenes of the new film “Haraj Maraj”, which is her first leading
role in a film. The film will be participating in the annual French Cannes Film
Festival during the year 2013, due to the fact that filming is not yet complete
to be included in this year’s events.

According to the London based
Elaph, the story of the film revolves around a closed Egyptian society and
features many events that are expected to draw viewers. Ateen plays the role of
the daughter of an important man and all she wants in life is to find the right
man and settle down with. She does not care about the characteristics of the
man, but is only concerned about settling down.

Ateen expressed her admiration
with the role she plays stating that it is different from any other she played
in the past.

FedEx also predicted “a phase of somewhat slower economic growth going forward,” compared with earlier this year, although Chief Executive Frederick Smith stressed that he views the trend as an indicator of a normal economic cycle, rather than as the precursor of a double-dip recession.

Mr. Smith, speaking on a conference call with analysts, said a number of factors, including solid corporate balance sheets and pent-up demand, should lead to continued global economic growth. He noted that FedEx “is seeing signs of a solid holiday shipping season.”

In midmorning composite trading on the New York Stock Exchange, FedEx shares were down 4.4% at $82.17 after the company forecast second-quarter earnings of between $1.15 and $1.35 a share, below analysts’ expectations.

The company, which is based in Memphis, Tenn., also lifted its earnings forecast for fiscal 2011 to between $4.80 and $5.25 from between $4.60 and $5.20.

FedEx’s high-margin international-priority air freight service has been particularly strong, with quarterly volume climbing 19% from a year earlier. Still, that trailed the 23% growth rate FedEx logged in the fiscal fourth quarter ended in May, as well as its July forecast of fiscal-first-quarter growth of more than 20%. Regardless, FedEx executives said the first-quarter volume growth was largely in keeping with their expectations, and they said the business has continued to boom.

The company said it is “putting all hands on deck to keep up with the demand” for international-priority air freight, which has been a key driver of earnings, and is viewed as a barometer of global trade.

FedEx has introduced new planes to improve services between the U.S. and Asia, where eastbound volume has been driven by strong growth in shipments of electronics and other consumer products, and also is bringing back planes parked in the desert to boost capacity.

But FedEx’s domestic trucking unit continues to rack up losses in the face of overcapacity and weak pricing. The company said Thursday that it will combine its FedEx Freight and FedEx National LTL operations at the end of January.

It expects to record $150 million to $200 million in charges in the next two quarters as it cuts its full-time employee count by 1,700, or some 5%, and closes 100 facilities.

For the quarter ended Aug. 31, FedEx reported a profit of $380 million, or $1.20 a share, up sharply from $181 million, or 58 cents a share, a year earlier. In July, the company raised its per-share forecast to between $1.05 and $1.25.

Release Date: 02/16/2012Contact Information: Elias Rodriguez, 212-637-3664, rodriguez.elias@epa.gov

(New York, N.Y.) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a cleanup plan for contaminated soil, ground water and six waste disposal areas at the American Cyanamid Superfund Site in Bridgewater Township, New Jersey, located on the Raritan River. The soil, ground water and waste disposal areas, called impoundments, are contaminated with volatile organic compounds and other hazardous materials. The ground water underlying the site is highly contaminated with benzene. Area residents are serviced by a public water supply that provides a safe source of drinking water.

The EPA is encouraging the public to comment on the plan through March 31, 2012 and will hold a public meeting on March 8, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School, 14 Vogt Drive, Bridgewater, New Jersey.

"The cleanup plan for the American Cyanamid site is an important milestone in the EPA efforts to protect the health of people who live or work near the facility and water quality in the Raritan River," said EPA Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck. “EPA encourages the public to comment on the proposed plan and to learn more about it at the March 8 public meeting.”

Many volatile organic compounds are known to cause cancer in animals and benzene can cause cancer in people. Some volatile organic compounds have no known health effects. The extent and nature of potential health effects depend on many factors, including the level and length of exposure.

The American Cyanamid Superfund site has a history of industrial pollution dating back to 1915. For nearly 100 years, prior owners used the location for manufacturing chemicals. The site was placed on the federal Superfund list in 1983 after hazardous chemicals were found in the soil and ground water. The 435-acre Superfund site contained various areas used for the disposal of chemical sludge and other waste. In 1998, the EPA deleted 140 acres of the site from the Superfund list after they were evaluated and determined to be acceptable for redevelopment. The TD Bank Ballpark Stadium was subsequently built on a portion of the area. In 2009, Pfizer Inc. assumed responsibility for the American Cyanamid site as part of its purchase of the Wyeth Holding Corporation, a prior owner.

Because of the nature and complexity of the contamination at the site, the EPA divided the investigation and cleanup into phases. The plan announced today is the first phase of the cleanup. The proposed plan announced today details approaches to address contaminated soil, ground water and six waste disposal areas (Impoundments 3, 4, 5, 13, 17 and 24). Two additional impoundments (Impoundments 1 and 2) are the focus of a separate study to consider the feasibility of options to address them.

The highly toxic material in Impoundments 3, 4, and 5 will be treated at their current locations by introducing a mixing agent into the waste to make it more solid. This treatment method is a proven technology that immobilizes contaminants to prevent their migration. After this step, the waste disposal areas will be covered with a barrier system that traps vapors and prevents contaminated air from escaping into the atmosphere.

The soil at the site will be addressed using three different methods depending on the extent of the pollution in the soil. Soil that consists of tarry material or is highly toxic, similar to the waste within Impoundment 3, 4, and 5, will be excavated and combined with the material in the three impoundments. It will be treated with the existing waste in Impoundments 3, 4 and 5. Soil that contains volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds will be covered with a vapor control barrier and mitigation system to prevent the release of vapors into the air. Soil that has a lower level of pollution will be covered by a 24-inch thick engineered cap that will serve as a barrier that prevents direct contact. Additionally, the EPA will conduct an ecological study of the waste in Impoundments 13, 17 and 24, which are located in the flood plain of the site, to determine the appropriate treatment for these materials.

A currently operating ground water collection system, which has already treated millions of gallons of contaminated ground water at the site, will be improved by relocating the primary extraction wells to a more central location. Several new extraction wells will be added to enhance the efficiency of the ground water collection system. In addition, a recovery system for collecting and treating shallow contaminated ground water from portions of the site will be constructed at several locations. This system will prevent contaminated ground water from seeping into the Raritan River, Cuckhold’s Brook and Middle Brook. The details of these improvements will be developed during the remedial design phase of the cleanup project.

The proposed plan also calls for the placement of controls such as legal restrictions on land use to minimize the potential of future exposure and to ensure that the cleanup measures are not disturbed. Throughout the cleanup, monitoring will be conducted to ensure the effectiveness of the remedy. The EPA will conduct periodic reviews to ensure that the cleanup remains protective of public health and the environment.

The EPA is accepting public comments on the proposed plan until March 31, 2012. Written comments may be mailed or emailed to:

The recent flooding in Thailand has disrupted more than exports of cars and PCs. It also has knocked out supplies of a popular toy at the height of the holiday season.

Inventories of Magna-Tiles, which are magnetic connector toys, have disappeared, says its manufacturer, Valtech LLC. Flooding in the suburbs of Bangkok, where the Chicago-area company’s factory was located, destroyed the machinery that makes the square- and triangle-shaped tiles used to construct rocket ships, roadways and skyscrapers.

That has triggered a run on the toys, which have caught on in schools and with young children, who find that the magnets make the toys easy to assemble. Prices have soared, more than doubling in the past month since the company announced it had run out of product.

A 32-piece set of colored tiles retails for $49.50, and a 100-piece set lists for $110. But sellers on eBay are asking $150 to $250 for the 100-piece sets, while sellers on Amazon.com are offering the large set for $349.99 plus shipping. Smaller sets are listing for $65 to $100.

“We did not think the flooding would get to our industrial park but it did,” said Rudy Valenta, chief executive and owner of 14-year-old Valtech. “You can’t fight mother nature.”

Roger Glazebrook, a manager at Manhattan store Mary Arnold Toys, said the company was lucky because it stocked up on the Magna-Tiles months ago. They are the store’s top seller, he said. But the store finally ran dry on Tuesday.

“Now everyone is calling,” he said. “It’s one of those unobtainable toys.”

Magna-Tiles were introduced in 1997 and got off to a slow start. When schools began buying them as educational tools, the business took off around 2003 and it has been growing steadily ever since.

The floods came at the worst possible time. The company generates about 35% of its sales in the last three months of the year, said Mr. Valenta.

Valtech subcontracts the manufacturing of its Magna-Tiles to the factory of a major toy maker in the suburbs of Bangkok. The arrangement has worked well since the deal was struck nine years ago, said Mr. Valenta, who wouldn’t identify the company.

But in early October, monsoon rains triggered the worst flooding Thailand has seen in decades. The deluge left the factory under more than six feet of water for more than a month as runoff from the north besieged the city. Production came to a halt and ruined Valtech’s machinery.

All hasn’t been lost, though. Valtech officials were able to salvage the molds used to make the plastic squares and triangles. They plan to restart production at a new factory outside the flood zone by early next year. But even then it could take two months or more to ramp up production. Mr. Valenta hopes to start selling tiles by April.

Until then, consumers have been left to hunt for the last available Magna-Tiles. Sophia Chiang, the chief executive of a California start-up that helps nonprofits to raise money, was looking to buy more tiles for her two children. “My kids love the Magna-Tiles,” she said. “We have 150.”

But Mrs. Chiang was shocked when she searched for the tiles on Amazon.com and found sellers on the site were asking $300 for a toy she spent $100 on just months ago. She passed, because she only buys from Amazon merchants when they offer products at a discount. “I thought it was holiday markup,” she said. “I had no idea it was the Thai thing.”

Some retailers have also taken to the Internet, touting their tile inventory. “Yes we have @Magnatiles! We stock up so you don’t have to worry,” announced the Twitter account of Baltimore toy retailer aMuseToys. On Dec. 14, the company posted a follow-up tweet: “Just had an economist here say we need to raise our prices on @magnatiles. Told him we understand supply and demand, but will never raise ‘em.”

While serious bartenders tend to assemble their tools piecemeal, we layfolk often fall for the convenience of bar-in-a-box type sets. The problem with those? They generally stink. Not so with this one, a collaboration between Bombay Sapphire and New York-based fashion label Barking Irons. It includes high-quality, professional grade tools that you’ll see behind the bar of any craft-centric cocktail joint: a Boston shaker, a hefty Hawthorne strainer, an elegant Japanese bar spoon, a citrus squeezer. It even includes more esoteric bar items like a bird’s-nest double strainer used to remove small shards of ice from a shaken drink (to keep the cocktail from getting too diluted) and an ice pick, should you be interested in mastering the art of carving huge globes of ice for your Scotch. And the bag itself, modeled after an antique doctor’s bag, is gorgeous. The exterior is a buttery soft, leather and the interior is a striking sapphire-blue waxed canvas. It practically begs you to make a martini. $495, barkingirons.com
Santa Maria, Calif. A year ago, Pedro Garcia and his terminally ill wife, Julia, were about to be evicted from their home of nearly 40 years after their mortgage lender foreclosed on the loan.

Today, Mr. Garcia is living in his Southern California home nearly payment free. The turn of events came after the lender, Bank of America Corp., employed an unusual tactic that is being used on occasion to help some debt-strapped seniors locked into exotic mortgages known as option ARMs from losing their homes.

Pedro Garcia was able to stay in his Southern California home after his mortgage lender wrote down the bulk of his loan and issued a reverse mortgage for the balance.

“There are a lot of people who lost their houses [in the recession], so I’m fortunate,” says Mr. Garcia, a 69-year-old retired corrections officer. “We lived in this house since 1970 and this was our dream.” Mrs. Garcia died last November.

Mr. Garcia owed about $490,000 on his home, which a recent appraisal said is now worth only about $150,000. Bank of America wrote down about $405,000 of the loan. To account for the rest, the bank then issued a reverse mortgage for about $85,000. But instead of paying that amount to Mr. Garcia, as is usual with a reverse mortgage, the bank paid the proceeds to itself. A reverse mortgage is a form of equity loan available to older homeowners that generally doesn’t need to be repaid until after the homeowner dies.

That means Mr. Garcia can remain in his home without having to make mortgage payments to Bank of America. (Mr. Garcia is making small monthly payments on a second mortgage that was modified by another lender.) When he dies, the house reverts to Bank of America, and his heirs can choose to buy it back for the $85,000 plus interest and fees. Or, if the heirs choose to walk away, the bank can sell the house, and any proceeds above the loan amount would go to Mr. Garcia’s family.

Under pressure from the government, banks in general have been stepping up efforts to work with financially troubled homeowners. The Treasury Department this month said it had met its goal of beginning trial loan modifications by Nov. 1 for 500,000 borrowers as part of the Obama administration’s $75 billion foreclosure-prevention plan. But many stretched borrowers complain it’s still hard to get help from lenders, and economists expect foreclosures to continue to increase.

In Mr. Garcia’s case, the big write-down Bank of America was willing to take highlights the controversy surrounding pay-option adjustable-rate mortgages. Option ARMS, as they’re known, have become the focus of investigations and a spate of lawsuits by borrowers who believe they were misinformed about the loans’ complicated structure. It also follows the bank’s settlement last fall of predatory-lending charges brought by several state attorneys general against Countrywide Financial Corp., which Bank of America acquired last year. Under the settlement, in which the bank neither admitted nor denied guilt, the bank agreed to, where possible, modify the terms of certain subprime mortgages and option ARMs serviced by Countrywide.

Mr. Garcia, pictured with his granddaughter, refinanced his home with an option ARM and quit his job to care for his terminally ill wife.

Michael Drawdy, Bank of America’s senior vice president for home retention, says the bank has issued approximately 20 reverse mortgages with write-downs to borrowers like Mr. Garcia who have “dire circumstances.” He says that though the bank loses money in this process, it would lose nearly as much by foreclosing on the home and selling it in today’s market.

Option ARMS are turning out to be nearly as toxic as subprime loans. According to Lender Processing Services Inc., 32% of option ARMs were delinquent or in foreclosure as of Aug. 31, compared with 48% of subprime loans. But unlike subprime loans, which typically went to people who had weak credit, option ARMs were generally given to borrowers with good credit, including many seniors who had significant equity in their homes and wanted to refinance to take money out to pay bills. They were lured partly by “teaser” interest rates—sometimes as low as 1.5%.

One feature of option ARMS is that borrowers can select among three or four different payment choices. Many borrowers opted for the minimum payment, not realizing that by doing so, their loan balances and payments could jump over time because the payments didn’t even cover the monthly interest. Most elderly borrowers who were put into option ARMs “didn’t understand how it worked,” says Jennifer Sinton, deputy director of the Foreclosure Prevention Project at South Brooklyn Legal Services. “They’re some of the most abusive loans out there.”

Difficult to Modify

Option ARMs are proving difficult to modify. The most common way that banks modify troubled mortgages is to reduce the interest rate on the loan. But many option ARMs already have low rates, so there isn’t much room to reduce them further. And with home prices having plunged in California, Florida and many other markets where option ARMs were popular, a growing number of borrowers with these loans owe more on their mortgages than the homes are worth, even as principal payments keep rising.

Housing counselors say Bank of America is playing a leading role in dealing with option ARMs, since its settlement with state attorneys general last fall. And a key tool the bank is using, at least for seniors, is the reverse mortgage. To qualify for such a mortgage, a homeowner must be at least 62 years old.

Mr. Garcia decided to refinance his home in early 2006 and use the proceeds to renovate his three-bedroom house, which was purchased in 1970 for $23,000. At the time of the refinancing, the house was appraised at $465,000, with the mortgage broker recommending that Mr. Garcia take out $400,000. He used $70,000 on renovations and much of the rest to pay his wife’s medical bills. After he quit a post-retirement job as a construction worker to care for Mrs. Garcia, he dipped into those funds for day-to-day living expenses as well.

Mr. Garcia said he initially sought a fixed-rate mortgage, but agreed to take an option ARM because the broker convinced him the payments would be low for a long period of time. “He said it would go up only $100 per year for five years,” Mr. Garcia says. That turned out to be untrue, as the rate immediately began to adjust, based on market interest-rate benchmarks.

The mortgage, which was originated by a third-party lender and sold to Countrywide, offered four payment choices. The lowest of them, the only one Mr. Garcia says he could afford, was less than the interest on the loan, meaning the principal grew even as he made payments. After struggling to stay current, Mr. Garcia finally quit paying when the mortgage payment eclipsed the $2,600 a month he was receiving from California Public Employees’ Retirement System and Social Security.

Eviction Stayed

When a judge granted an eviction order in October of last year, Mr. Garcia contacted California Senior Legal Hotline in Sacramento. Lawyers for the group persuaded the judge to stay the eviction, basing their argument in part on the settlement agreement reached between Countrywide and several state attorneys general. Mr. Garcia’s case wasn’t subject to that settlement, however, because his home was already in foreclosure proceedings. Still, Bank of America’s Mr. Drawdy says the bank agreed to grant the reverse mortgage and write down the difference after hearing from the legal hotline group.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Two negatives make a positive when the brains of Vladimir Putin and Silvio Berlusconi are fused together in a satirical play that premiered this week in Moscow, just over two weeks before a presidential election in Russia.

“BerlusPutin,” a Russian adaptation of Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo’s play “The Double Headed Anomaly,” is being performed by Moscow’s Teatr.doc, an independent theater company housed in a dusty cellar in the centre of the Russian capital.

The play satirizes the real-life friendship between Putin and Berlusconi, the former Italian prime minister who was described by the Russian leader as “one of the greatest European politicians” after losing power during Italy’s debt crisis.

It also reflects a revival of political satire in Russia since private grumbling about Prime Minister Putin’s tightly controlled political system, known as “managed democracy,” erupted into a public outcry after he and President Dmitry Medvedev announced plans last September to swap places.

“BerlusPutin” is a film script within a play. It veers chaotically between dark satire and acerbic real-time political commentary as an ageing actress, who has spent her advance, discovers she has been engaged to play Putin’s wife Lyudmila, estranged from the prime minister and living in a monastery.

The horrified actress, played by Yevdokia Germanova, learns her character must nurse her husband to health after a dual assassination attempt that left Putin and Berlusconi with half a brain each for surgeons to patch together in Putin’s skull.

The bewildered convalescent – his part read by the director, played by actor Sergei Epishev – asks his wife to recount his life to him, only to hear a litany of misdeeds starting with his arrival at their first date an hour-and-a-half late.

Russian playwright Varvara Faer adapted the play to include current events and focus on Putin instead of Berlusconi, but left the role of the wife intact.

“What politicians do with their wives, they do to their countries,” said Faer. “The wife of a politician can put up resistance to his actions.”

Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, did not immediately comment on the production.

DOBBY THE HOUSE ELF

In the play, Putin’s surprise builds until he disappears from the monastery, only to reappear in the lower house of parliament. He dissolves parliament, calls new elections and re-opens a criminal investigation into his own actions.

“A minus and a minus,” says Lyudmila’s priest, also played by Epishev’s director, pondering the outcome of the brain transplant. “Two negatives have become a positive.”

Whatever insights the play offers into the nature of Putin’s rule, it is a gleeful romp through the Internet gags and media taboos of his 12 years in power.

Epishev, as Putin, wears a foam rubber prosthesis of a naked torso with prominent muscles which the real Putin is wont to display in macho pursuits intended to impress voters.

Epishev’s Putin undergoes electric shock treatment offstage to deal with encroaching wrinkles and returns in a mask of Dobby the House Elf, a character from the “Harry Potter” films in whom Internet pundits have found a similarity with Putin.

Forced to improvise Lyudmila’s responses to her husband’s bewildered questions, the actress begins her performance reluctantly, then embraces her role with wicked glee until her conscience reasserts itself.

“I’m betraying all of my political principles!” Germanova shrieks. “I love Putin! I love Berlusconi!”

“If I were him, I’d think you were the one with the problem,” Epishev’s director replies. “You have political schizophrenia. It’s as if you have one side of your brain to make bold political statements and the other to deny them.”

POLITICAL WINDS

Her conflicting loyalties reflect a crisis of identity on Moscow’s theater scene, where actors who stand up for Putin earn scorn from their colleagues.

Among them is Germanova’s mentor, Oleg Tabakov, the head of the Moscow Art theater, co-founded by the pioneer of “method” acting, Konstantin Stanislavsky, and subject to the changing political winds as a state theater in the Soviet era.

Tabakov told Radio Svoboda the theater received more support from Putin than it did from any other Russian or Soviet leader.

“In all the Art theater’s 113 years … not one of these men cared enough to ensure the theater underwent technical upgrades,” Tabakov said. “But presidential candidate Putin did.”

Teatr.doc’s low-tech basement is festooned with placards from the recent wave of opposition protests.

LOS ANGELES — From 2004 to 2011, Kenyon Martin played the role of enforcer behind Carmelo Anthony on the Denver Nuggets. They might not be teammates anymore, but the Martin is still coming to his longtime friend’s defense.

With Anthony’s return from a strained right groin injury nearing and so much scrutiny about whether or not he’ll be able to mesh with point guard sensation Jeremy Lin, Martin — who signed with the Clippers recently after playing in China — said the concerns of fans and media are unfounded. Anthony, as Martin sees it, will do what it takes to make it work.

"First of all man, I wanted to call in to ESPN and say something when I saw them saying [Anthony would mess it up]," Martin told SI.com. "Melo wants to win. The man is a competitor, and he wants to win. He’s as competitive as they come.

"Smart basketball player, and the best player on that team — hands down. So I don’t understand why people are questioning whether he’s selfish or not. No, the man is not selfish. The man wants to win. He’ll do whatever it takes to win. I don’t think he’ll mess nothing up. He’s going to come in and be Carmelo Anthony."

Being Carmelo Anthony was considered a good thing during most of his time in Denver, where the third pick of the 2003 draft led the Nuggets to eight straight winning seasons and playoff appearances after eight straight losing seasons before his arrival. Martin arrived in July of 2004, when he agreed to a sign-and-trade that sent him from New Jersey to Denver in large part because of Anthony’s presence.

And while they never won a championship together, there was no shortage of good times shared. They won 50-plus games the last four seasons, and reached the Western Conference finals in 2009 before falling to the Lakers in six games.

But after Martin left his Chinese Basketball Association team (Xinjiang) in late December and returned to the United States, he began to notice the anti-Anthony message coming out of Denver. Nuggets coach George Karl had routinely discussed his team’s new style and how the absence of Anthony made his job easier. The Melo-drama, as it was dubbed, clearly bothered Karl before Anthony was traded to the Knicks last February. Martin, however, said Karl’s comments went too far.

"Man, listen, George needs to keep his mouth shut, first and foremost," Martin said. "Melo don’t play there no more. So Karl shouldn’t be commenting on Melo. If George was such a great coach, then Melo would want to stay. He wouldn’t want to leave.

"If the organization was ran right, he wouldn’t want to leave, so it ain’t Melo. With Melo, not one time when he was there did he bring that in the locker room when all that stuff was going on. Not one day. Everybody made it a bigger deal than it had to be. That’s a good kid.

"They act like this kid was a cancer, like he came in there and destroyed the locker room and made everybody hate him. No, it wasn’t nothing like that man. And it bothers me for people to be talking about how he’s a selfish player and he has to defend himself."

The Nuggets, who got off to a 15-7 start but have lost seven of their last nine games, cut ties with a number of core players from their recent teams.

"They’ve got the team they wanted now," Martin said. "They got all us out of there. They didn’t offer me an extension, they traded [Anthony], J.R. [Smith] is gone [to New York]. They’ve got the team they want. So why doesn’t [Karl] worry about coaching them and leaving Melo alone — bottom line? It bothers me for them to keep harping at that."

Martin, whose Clippers fell to 19-10 on Saturday with an overtime loss to San Antonio, will be rooting for the Knicks as some sort of strange revenge.

"I just hope [Anthony] comes in and they play well," he said. "Because if not, then it’s going to be a whole other can of worms."

Umar Patek, an alleged mastermind of the 2002 Bali bombing, denied meeting al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in the Pakistani town they were both in.

In a video of his interrogation obtained by the AP news agency, Mr Patek said his presence in Abbottabad at the same time was "a coincidence".

He is facing six charges in Jakarta, Indonesia, including two that are terrorism-related.

He is believed to be a key member of the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah.

Mr Patek's lawyer also said on Monday that his presence in Abbottabad at the same time as Osama Bin Laden was a coincidence.

"He went to Pakistan as part of his plans to migrate to Afghanistan. He never had plans to meet Osama bin Laden," defence lawyer Asludin Hatjani is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

Security analysts believe, however, that it was no coincidence that he was caught in the same town in which al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was later killed. Officials cannot confirm whether the two met.

Mr Patek, who was arrested in January 2011 in the town where Osama bin Laden was later killed in a US raid, faces charges for pre-meditated murder, bomb-making and illegal firearms possession ref. Some of his charges carry the death penalty.

In August, the 45-year-old militant was extradited to Indonesia in a move seen at the time as a significant coup for anti-terror agencies in the country.

Mr Patek is not facing terrorism charges for the Bali bombings, as the terrorism law came into effect only in 2003 and cannot be applied retrospectively.

But he is facing terrorism charges for allegedly harbouring terrorists and possessing ammunition used to launch militant training in Aceh province in 2010.

He is also facing murder charges for the Bali bombings and Jakarta church bombings in 2000.

On Monday, his lawyers objected to the murder charges, telling the court that he was not involved in the planning of the attack.

In a document obtained by the BBC from the defence, his lawyers argued that he was not directly involved in any actual killings, as his role was limited to making the bombs.

The trial, which began last week, is expected to go on for months, with a verdict likely to be delivered at the end of May or early June.

Prosecutors in Indonesia have said that they will push for the maximum death penalty, but some analysts think he could be given life imprisonment instead if found guilty.

The Bali attack in 2002 took place at Paddy's Bar and the Sari Club in the resort of Kuta. It targeted at foreigners and those killed were from 21 countries, including 88 Australians, 38 Indonesians and 28 Britons.

According to a court document obtained by the BBC last week, he fled to the Philippines after the attacks in Bali, and joined the rebel Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) there, with the intention of going to Afghanistan.

In June 2009, he returned to Indonesia with his Philippine wife Ruqayyah Husein Luceno, hiding for a year in Jakarta and other parts of the country, before heading to Pakistan where he was finally apprehended.
